Fuyuhiko Takata’s films twist classical fairy tales into tragicomical, erotic, and gore-y remixes that make you question the symbols and endings you thought you knew. Often filming in his own room, the Hiroshima-born artist uses handmade props and costumes to depict shame, desire, and the abject in wholly fantastical and unapologetic terms.

Britney, Rapunzel, and Angela Merkel are among those ravaged by Takata’s delight for upending conventional narratives. Spiralling into the tragicomic and embracing the perverse, these films present a lurid and lewd excavation of a societal subconscious that refuses to walk on eggshells.

Working across moving image, performance, creative computing and installation, they dream & explore & critique & fret & catastrophise & imagine & play — for a collective remembering of forgotten pasts, for a critical examination of normalised presents, and for a visualising of freer futures as, of course, imagined from the periphery. Their films have been shown at the Museum of the Moving Image New York, Sheffield DocFest and NOWNESS Asia and they have programmed for Queer East Film Festival.
